5 spots to grab a bite with your dog

By admin · February 16, 2011 · Filed in Uncategorized · No Comments »

We are dog people and Savannah is definately a dog town! So you and your pooch want to grab a bite together. Here are some of our choices (these are all downtown, we’ll tell you about outside of the city another time)….

Clary’s Cafe – This breakfast and lunch spot was made famous in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil for being the place John Berendt met so many oddballs. This is still a unique spot. There are 5 or 6 tables outside and your dog(s) are more than welcome, the servers will even bring them treats (our dogs stop almost every morning).

Vinnie Van GoGo’s - Pizza by the slice is the specialty here. There is a good bit of outside seating and room for you and Fido. For a cheap, good meal for you both, this is a great spot (word to the wise….CASH only here)

Blowin’ Smoke BBQ - Besides really good fried okra, this place has the largest patio in downtown Savannah AND a parking lot! You can sometimes ask them if they have any of those giant beef rib bones — your dog will totally love you for that!

City Market / Ellis Square - Wild Wing’s features lots of outdoor seating and live music on the courtyard many evenings of the week.  Sit back, relax and grab a cold one while you eat and listen to tunes.  Not in the mood for wings? There are small picnic tables right across the street in Ellis Square. Grab takeout from a nearby spot and enjoy the same atmosphere.

Forsyth Park - If it is wide open spaces you and Fido want, this is it! Savannah calls this the “big park”. It features shaded areas with trees and shrubs for sniffing or open lawns for running and frisbee. Bring a picnic and a cooler (and plastic cups) and enjoy some of the best Savannah has to offer. Just please be sure to scoop!

Our Top 5 Spots for Happy Hour

By admin · January 4, 2011 · Filed in Uncategorized · No Comments »

Hey, one of the coolest things about Savannah is our total openness to let you stroll our beautiful streets with a cocktail in your hand (it is known as a “go cup”)!  And, as locals, we usually hang out in spots that have an interesting atmosphere and cheap drinks. Why not join us? Here are 5 of our favorite spots (it isn’t easy to choose)….

The Rail Pub – a long standing tradition of free peanuts (throw the husks on the floor), cheap hot dogs, and 40 oz. Miller Lite beers for $5 make this a unique spot.  Happy hour drink specials exist too! Check ‘em out at www.therailpub.com

Abe’s on Lincoln – one of Savannah’s newest re-born small pubs is totally smoke free. Happy Hour will get you some of that free popcorn that we have a love/hate relationship with, $2 domestic tall boys and some money off cocktails! Not to mention friendly bartenders and helpful patrons! Sit inside or out. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Abes-on-Lincoln/304197992473

Mellow Mushroom – this spot actually has FOOD. The pretzels are good for soaking up beer and they have $2 pints (everything but Guinness) each weekday from 5 – 7! Since this is away from City Market area, you’ll be hanging outside with all the students (they like cheap, good beer!). From here you can see the count down clock to the next St. Patrick’s Day! http://www.mellowmushroom.com/#/store/index/savannah

Moon River Brewing Company – we LOVE these guys! They are our only micro-brewery and seriously haunted! Happy Hour will get you a discount on their custom beers and a discount on cocktails. On Friday’s join them for the toast at 6 pm and get a free beer sample. Oh yeah, while you are there, pick up one of our self guided scavenger hunt tours! www.moonriverbrewing.com

Jen’s and Friends – Man, or woman, can not live on beer alone at Happy Hour! Check out Jen’s and Friends – home of 100 martini’s for a great alternative! Sit outside for some prime people watching at Johnson Square. Bring your pooch – they’ll have a drink for him/her too (water of course!).  www.jensandfriendssavannah.com
